BCGS 2025 Fall symposium: natural source EM. Transforming Mineral Discovery: The Power of Airborne Natural Field Electromagnetics

Airborne natural-field electromagnetics has evolved into a practical and powerful exploration technology, with MobileMT demonstrating that passive EM measurements can provide reliable subsurface resistivity imaging from near surface to depths of 1–2 km or more across a wide range of geological and geoelectrical environments. By combining broadband frequency sampling, three-component total-field magnetic measurements, a remote electric-field reference, adaptive integration windows, and frequency-dependent noise-suppression workflows, the system improves signal fidelity, depth resolution, and sensitivity to geoelectrical boundaries of any orientation while maintaining stable performance in the presence of industrial noise. Field examples and comparisons presented for porphyry, uranium, epithermal, polymetallic, hydrogeological, lithium brine, and other settings show that MobileMT can equal or exceed the performance of conventional airborne and ground EM methods, often delivering greater depth penetration, broader resistivity sensitivity, better structural definition, and more efficient regional coverage. Direct field comparisons with ZTEM further show that MobileMT benefits from total-field measurement, a broader usable frequency range, and more stable inversion products, with examples such as El Teniente and Shea Creek illustrating clearer recovery of geoelectrical structure and improved sensitivity to targets of different orientations. Together, these results show that MobileMT has transformed airborne passive EM from an emerging concept into a mainstream exploration tool for deep and concealed mineral discovery.
